GeoPedia - iPhone's Location-based Wikipedia

GeoPedia - iPhone's Location-based Wikipedia. GeoPedia is basically a location-based Wikipedia interface for your iPhone. GeoPedia takes advantage of geographic positioning functionality, like those introduced in iPhone firmware 1.1.3, and provides iPhone owners with a Wikipedia feed customized to their current location.

Users can browsed the location-customized list of Wikipedia articles that GeoPedia returns and then navigate to articles of interest to learn more. As your location changes, simply refresh GeoPedia and the feed will update. Wikipedia will follow you wherever you go.

With the iPhone’s (v1.1.3 and up) Google Maps My Location feature, iPhone users can hone in on their approximate location. It’s not GPS accurate, but it can usually find the exact street corner that you happen to be loitering around (of course, your mileage will vary). And, with the ability to track your general position, it was only a matter of time before an application like GeoPedia came to light.

Chinese Mobile Phones Demand will increase 15% in 2008

Chinese Mobile Phones Demand will increase 15% in 2008. Due to MediaTek recorded falling handset chip shipments in Q4 2007, chip makers have been conservative about demand for handsets in the China market.

However, Nokia are expecting demand for handsets in the China to increase about 15% this year! Demand for handsets in China totaled 250 million units in 2007, the sources indicated, making China’s handset market the second largest in size after the US market.

IC design houses such as MediaTek, Elan Microelectronics, Richtek Technology, Global Media Technology, and Pixart Imaging would benefit from growing demand for handsets in the China market. Meanwhile China’s white-box handset makers are also determined to increase exports, and an increasing number of makers are already enjoying strong sales performance in Southeast Asia.

Sony Ericsson W380 Tangerine Black, Champagne Black

Sony Ericsson W380 Tangerine Black, Champagne Black. Sony Ericsson goes on releasing more colours for their cell phones. Sony Ericsson’s stylish clamshell W380 has now a new black color, tangerine black now joins champagne black.

Both version are almost identical (as you can see from the image) with an exception of the little logos which come in gold or orange. It seems this isn’t actually the new color - rather it’s a variation of the existing one. Though to be fair, orange is more Walkmanish, and gold makes the device look more classy.

Verizon Motorola RIZR Z6cx

Verizon Motorola RIZR Z6cx. Verizon Wireless has launched yet another version of their world-traveling Motorola RIZR Z6 slider. The Motorola Z6cx has gone live on Verizon Wireless, but don’t be fooled by the extra letters adorning the model name of this slick slider-phone. The “x” in Motorola Z6cx probably stand for “no camera.” In other words, the Moto Z6cx lightens its globe-trotting load by doing away with the 2 megapixel camera that its sibling Moto Z6c so happily sports.

About Motorola Z6cx. Motorola Z6cx is the camera-less variant of the Z6c. All other features and the design are the same. It is world-capable, as it has CDMA/EV-DO for domestic usage and GSM for overseas.

The lack of camera is probably Moto’s way of appealing to jet-setting corporate types that can’t bring a camera into the workplace - trade secrets being secrets, after all. It’s a shame that the camera is gone. You can grab the Motorola Z6cx without a camera for $179.99, after contract and rebates.

iPhone to be outsold by Android

iPhone to be outsold by Android. Although, we still wait to see the first real device running the Android platform released, but Google’s group manager for mobile platforms Rich Miner is confident they will outsell the Apple iPhone. Speaking after his presentation on Thursday at the Emerging Communications Conference at the Computer History Museum in Silicon Valley, Miner said that’s it’s the matter of scale. “Once you have devices out there from Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and so on, there’s a much larger potential market on Android than for the iPhone,” he said.

But it’s not the competition Apple will face from Google, at least initially. Devices running the Android platform and iPhone are aimed at different markets. Google still wants to see their apps running on Apple’s handset and there’s no reason to worry the two companies will compete in the near future. But that could change of course. We’ll use numbers to prove Rich’s point. Two days ago Apple announced that iPhone SDK was downloaded for 100,000 times. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Google reported 750,000 downloads of Android SDK. Wow, this will be an interesting year…

AUEDO Thought-controlled + Voiceless Phone

AUEDO Thought-controlled + Voiceless Phone. The voiceless nerve phone Audeo is being developed to create a human-computer interface for communication without the need of physical motor control or speech production. Using signal processing, unpronounced speech representing the thought of the mind can be translated from intercepted neurological signals.

“The Audeo can enable voiceless communication that is virtually as easy as just thinking about it,” said Michael Callahan, CEO and co-founder of Ambient. The thought-controlled Audeo obviates the need to even open your mouth, since it detects the neural impulses associated with talking. The AUDEO hangs around your neck like some sort of alien voice-translator, and transmits the translated speech to a receiving speaker.

SongNumber Mobile Music Service

SongNumber Mobile Music Service. SongNumbers aims to go truly cross-platform by doing away with the platform altogether. The service claims that their “critical mass media utility” will empower artists and record labels by allowing customers to listen to and buy music directly from their mobile phone. The catch is that the customer doesn’t need to install anything on their cellphone. There’s no software, no media player, no DRM - just music on the cellphone.

Through SongNumbers’ patent-pending technology, each music track is assigned a phone number that customers can call to hear a preview of the song. If the song tickles the user’s fancy, a simple press of a number key buys them the track. But, it doesn’t end there, artists and labels can make money on the preview of the song through ads.

Sony Ericsson W700 Stun Gun

Sony Ericsson W700 Stun Gun. The police in Nottingham, England are surprised to have found it. The BBC reports that they found this stun gun disguised as a Sony Ericsson handset in the Hyson Green area.

Although it looks like a Sony Ericsson slider, the fact that it doesn’t actually work as a cellphone but does deliver 900,000 volts of electricity through two metal prongs should make the user a little cautious .

In fact, the 900,000V shock is 18 more likely to be fatal than the 500,000V shock that police-issue Tasers deliver. “It’s a shock that we found it. We are always concerned about finding different types of weapons on the streets. This could potentially kill someone,” said a Nottingham police officer.

Xda Atmos (HTC S730) by O2 UK. O2 UK just launched the Xda Atmos, also known as the HTC S730. With an exception of touchscreen and built-in GPS receiver, the Windows Mobile 6 Standard edition powered smartphone has everything a business user could need — including the full slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Xda Atmos aka HTC S730 also features WiFi, HSDPA support, Microsoft Push email support, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, 2 megapixel camera, and of course the microSD memory slot.

On the other side, 64 MB of RAM doesn’t sound right even if it’s “paired” with 256 MB of ROM. The 400 MHz CPU should be enough for all the phone’s processing needs. The Xda Atmos is now available from O2 UK but currently listed for O2 business customers only. O2’s business customers can already grab the Xda Atmos here.

EmporiaLife Phone for Senior Citizens

EmporiaLife Phone for Senior Citizens. The “made for senior citizens” EmporiaLife phone has been spotted passing the FCC hurdle. As you can see from the image, the device looks quite simple. Large, hard-to-miss buttons and big monochrome screen are there and so is the quick access to contacts.

In addition, this fairly ugly handset also features dedicated alarm clock, lock key option, and a large red button on the back for making emergency calls. It comes in two dual-band versions (900/1800, 850/1900) and will run on AAA batteries. It has not been officially announced with any U.S. carriers but it will work on certain U.S. networks. Not a single mobile operator said they will carry the EmporiaLife, but even unlocked, it shouldn’t cost much.

iPhone Firmware 2.0 Jailbreak

iPhone Firmware 2.0 Jailbreak. iPhone firmware 2.0 is coming in June and some people are scared thinking they won’t be able to use their jailbroken iPhones any more.

Luckily the great folks of iPhone Dev Team are there to help us all. They got ahold of the new firmware that ships with the SDK (1.2, which will be released to public as 2.0), has already decrypted the disk image and jailbroken the firmware.

Yes, iPhone firmware 2.0 is hacked, and even though Apple may additionally tweak it before releasing the official update in June, we’ve no doubts these guys we’ll do their best to allow us to keep using the iPhone on any mobile operator. Wow, Keep up the great work guys!

How to Copy-Paste on iPhone

How to Copy-Paste on iPhone. Copy and paste is quite possibly the singularly most requested feature on the iPhone. Sure, the iPhone can recognize an phone number in any webpage/text message/email. And calling the number is a simple matter of tapping the phone number and initiating the call. But, what if you want to copy and paste a URL or block of text? Well, you need some good copy-n-paste action.

With the help of some handy bookmarklet code, iPhone users can copy text and URLs and then paste into a form or email the text/link to yourself or a friend. iCopy is the best solution to get your iPhone to copy/paste with ease. iCopy is the first (that I know of) application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to copy and paste text and URL’s between web pages. You also have the option of emailing copied text or URL’s.
